Paced like a thriller, “Icarus” is both incredibly exciting to watch and helpful in understanding a deeply unsettling reality. Photographer Yumna Al-Arashi had long been curious about the lines permanently writ across her great-grandmother’s face. Aisha, who was born in Aden, Yemen, had marks tattooed below the sides of her lips. When Al-Arashi began researching the origins of the tradition, she was bowled over by the matriarchal history she uncovered. It had Aunt Becky in a leading role, featured a gap-toothed Zac Efron and took place on a beach. Basically, “Summerland” was destined for greatness -- until it was canceled, that is.
